The skin is the largest organ that covers and protects our body. Aside from this, the skin has other functions including:

· Holding in fluid to prevent dehydration

· Helping us feel sensations, such as the pain and temperature

· Keeping out bacteria and other causes of infection

· Stabilizing our body temperature


Skin disease is a condition in which it causes rashes, inflammation or other skin changes. It varies in symptoms and severity, they could also be temporary or permanent, and painful or painless. Some skin conditions are also minor while some could be life-threatening.


The following are some of the common skin diseases that we have encountered, one way or another:

· Acne – this condition is commonly; located in the face, neck, backs and chest. This happens when the skin follicles are blocked, and there is a buildup of bacteria and dead skin in the pores.

· Alopecia areata – this is the condition in which the hair is falling in small patches

· Psoriasis – this causes scaly skin that feels hot and may swell

· Cold sore – this are the red, painful and fluid-filled blister that appears near the mouth and lips

· Rosacea – this appears to be flushed, thick skin and pimples

· Vitiligo – these are the patches of skin that lose pigmentation due to autoimmune destruction of cells

· Warts – a skin disease caused by a virus called human papillomavirus. They usually occur in groups and can be contagious

· Hives – this are the itchy, raised welts that usually occurs after an exposure to allergen. They are red, warm and mildly painful if touched

· Melanoma – this is the most serious form of skin cancer. This starts as a mole that has irregular shaped edges, asymmetrical shape and has multiple colors


Although most skin disorders and diseases aren’t preventable, especially those that are genetic. There are several ways to avoid contacting contagious skin diseases, such as:

· Limit contact with irritants and harsh chemicals

· Avoid sharing of personal items, like utensils and cosmetics

· Avoid direct contact with people who have existing skin infection

· Sleep for at least seven to eight hours a day

· Never share blankets, hairbrushes or swimsuits with anyone

· Drink plenty of water

· Wash your hands with soap and warm water frequently

· Get vaccinated for infectious skin conditions
